Step 4: Check the car's history and paperwork#

The car in front of you has a past, and you want to see it. Ask for service records — a thick folder of stamped maintenance is a great sign that someone cared. Match the mileage on the dashboard against the records and the documents; a number that doesn't add up is a red flag.

In many regions you can run a history check using the car's identification number to see things like reported accidents, whether money is still owed against it, or whether it was ever written off. The exact services and what they reveal vary by country, so check what's available where you are. It's usually a small cost for real peace of mind.

Finally, confirm the seller actually owns the car and has the right to sell it, and that the registration details match their ID. If a private seller is cagey about this, that's your cue to be cautious.

Step 5: Negotiate, then handle the paperwork properly#

Once you've found a car that checks out, use what you learned. The research from Step 2 gives you a fair price to anchor to, and anything the inspection turned up is a reasonable basis for a lower offer.

Negotiate politely and specifically. "The tires will need replacing soon, so I was thinking closer to X" lands better than a vague lowball. Agree on the final number before you talk about anything else.

When it's time to pay and transfer ownership, read every document before you sign — including any add-ons or fees that appear late in the process. Make sure the title or registration transfer is done correctly for your region, and keep copies of everything.
